The notion of Gender Reality is deeply rooted in a non-semiotic and ontological perspective incompatible with the textual construction of identity that is the epistemological background of our approach to Fashion. A perspective on research not limited to Fashion, of course. Any way, we are deeply concerned by this issue defining human beings by their biological matrix, because it allows us to face the crucial point of a ‘nostalgic’ return to reality-based philosophies -and Fashion is a challenging and crucial category for this discussion. We will focus our presentation on three main topics:1.Gender Reality vs Gender Ideology2.The ‘reality’ question3.Gender concepts and meaning: purposes for a Fashion semiotics. Our aim is intended to demonstrate that the notion itself of reality is not -as Greimas and Courtès have already very well explained in their Dictionary (Sémiotique. Dictionnaire raisonné de la théorie du langage Tome 2, 1986)- the proper object of a semiotics: our task as semioticians is instead to build models permitting to understand how the meaning is proposed.Nevertheless, we are concerned by the problematic of truthfulness, and we have in the 'real' body gender a first level of semiotisation of the natural world by its dialoge with the natural language.
