This paper presents the research project EUFACETS - EU Face AdvancedCommunication for Elders Treasuring in Society (HORIZON-ERC-POC 101100643; FARER20K2NELJ2, PI: prof. Massimo Leone). In reconceptualizing digital platforms with a specific focus on representing faces digitally, the project aims to nurture intergenerational connections that extend beyond surface-level associations, emphasizing meaningful semantic bonds rooted in shared narratives and memories. It offers an exploration of applying semiotics to the design of digital technologies catering to elderly users, particularly by crafting a social media platform tailored to their unique needs. Drawing from Umberto Eco’s semiotic framework and recognizing the increasing aging population alongside the pervasive influence of digital technology, the project advocates for a paradigm shift in designing digital platforms for seniors. It identifies a critical oversight in existing digital solutions, which frequently neglect the elderly demographic. This pursuit is underpinned by a critical review examining the intersection of elderly individuals, digital technology and facial representation. The importance of this endeavor lies in its dual focus on methodology and culture, aiming to reimagine the notion of applied within semiotics. It champions a design ethos that not only leverages digital innovation and technical prowess but also seeks to resonate with real-life experiences. Through a concerted emphasis on narrative and emotional resonance, the project seeks to infuse digital face representations with substantive meaning, countering the prevailing trend towards superficial commercialism on social platforms. Ultimately, it envisions a digital realm where genuine human connections take precedence over mere quantitative interactions.
