In my presentation, I want to reflect on different aspects of modeling systems in the current era of radical digital development. More precisely, I want to shed light on the topic of Artificial Intelligence within the context of Jury Michalowitsch Lotman’s concept of the semiosphere and modeling systems. I will focus on the mechanism of Natural Language Processing with ChatGPT4 as a prominent example. I will explain the implications of the human-AI relationship with regard to primary modeling systems and secondary modeling systems. AIs can substitute for human cognitive skills, e.g., learning, solving problems, and curating information. Comparatively, they have the capability to model and shape our worldview more than any other non-human participator within the human semiosphere. As a result, the explosive implementation of Artificial Intelligence causes a key shift within two frames: First, AIs as generators of signs and modeling processes become re-creators of realities. Second, AIs as semiospheric participants force us to re- and overthink our world models, value systems and our anthropocentric omnipotence. I will conclude my presentation with thoughts on the impacts of AI in the human semiosphere. By doing this, I will also dissertate on my attempt to conceptualize the given technological development and new stage we are entering by referring to principles and world modellings such as given by Sigmund Freud. Eventually, we are facing a fourth existential humiliation of humanity after the cosmological, biological, and psychological (Freud, 1917) which I would call The Semiospheric/Semiotic Humiliation of Humanity.
