“Femininity” is a social construction that has been defined and redefined by ideological discourses over time and from culture to culture. Nowadays, the definition of femininity has evolved beyond the gender binary, with contemporary views of femininity being defined as multidimensional, and incorporating varying degrees of femininity and masculinity across personal, social, and role identities.Since they are social constructs, masculinity and femininity are performed, reinforced, and subverted in communicative acts: appearance/self-fashioning, nonverbal gestures, formal speech acts, and artistic representations. Femininity and masculinity are taught and learned, meaning that they are inextricably linked to communication studies. This issue necessarily involves the representation of bodies. Artistic representations provide evidence that there were gender ideals for male and female bodies, thus creating a sense of what was expected or valorized for men and women of different times. So, Fashion and Arts have the power to convey (new) models of masculinity and femininity, and it is up to them to undertake this albeit arduous path of neo-naturalization of both femininity and masculinity. In this speech, one intends to illustrate post-human forms of femininity, starting with contributions from scholars such as Braidotti, Haraway, and Héritier, highlighting how they invite us to a conception of corporeality in a perspective one could label postransominescent (Rignani 2022). By way of examples of some case studies (as the model Rain Dove or the figure of the Neapolitan femminiello), the aim is to discuss several feminine ways of doing or being, going beyond gender essentialism based on biological sex.
