This work celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Musical Signification Project by delving into the expression of 'saudade' within Brazilian music from a semiotic perspective. 'Saudade,' a concept deeply rooted and central to Brazilian cultural identity, emerges as a crucial guiding thread for examining music also as a complex system of interconnected signs that transcends traditional linguistic barriers, conveying deep, rich, and even complex emotions. In this study, we aim to illustrate how 'saudade' is woven into the structure and essence of Brazilian music, acting as a vital meeting point between intense emotion, rich culture, and intricately elaborated musical semantics. Through existential semiotics, this study proposes to demonstrate how music, intrinsically permeated by the essence of 'saudade,' reflects and simultaneously can shape the collective experience, taking on a significant role as a vector of cultural meaning. This analysis aims not only to bring to the discussion the semantic depth intrinsic to 'saudade' but also to emphasize its indispensable function in constructing cultural narratives. By doing so, music is highlighted as a dynamic space for emotional and identity dialogue, reinforcing its position as a bridge between individuals and the collective. This study aims not only to contribute to the rich Musical Signification Project but also to collaborate with works and investigations on the interaction between music, meaning, and cultural experience, using 'saudade' as a paradigm for understanding musical semantics.
