During times of crises like protests or the war in Ukraine, controversial symbols and slogans play a significant role in mobilizing people and promoting unity for parties involved in the conflict. It is therefore not surprising that historically significant symbols gain prominence during conflicts, and they continue to be present long after wars have ended. One example is the slogan Glory to Ukraine!, which resurfaced in Ukrainian society following Ukrainian independence in the 1990s. It became more prominent during the 2013-2014 Euromaidan protests, which on a symbolic level contributed to its legitimization. After Russia´s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the slogan became associated with expressions of unity and solidarity with Ukraine. For instance, it is common for Ukrainian top officials to end their speeches with the slogan, while globally it is often used or advocated for by international actors to position themselves in relation to the ongoing conflict.By stepping into dialogue with Abram´s and Gardner´s work on symbolic objects in contentious politics (2023), I analyse the slogan Glory to Ukraine! in different communicative events since the escalation of the war in February 2022. I specifically observe its use as a tool of symbolic politics, and a means of identification and positioning in the context of the ongoing war. To illustrate the meaning-making dynamics, I rely on semiotics of culture and the importance of cultural memory in evoking socially significant narratives and topics associated with the slogan, which in turn influence the audience´s interpretation of conflict-related events.
