Though greetings are a highly frequent universal phenomenon, they can vary significantly within and across languages, social groups, and even among the same individual in different circumstances. A diachronic perspective on the paradigm of Romanian greetings indicates the fact that many greetings have gone out of use, being currently considered exotic, while the others are reinvested with new cultural meanings according to the new social realities. The dynamics of greetings, generated first by the changes occurring in the social reality, are also influenced by the contemporary bias towards globalization, both at an economic and linguistic level. The borrowing of foreign greetings, facilitated by the migration phenomenon and the new media, the fact that some obsolete greetings and farewells go out of use, along the need to re-create the meaning of old formulae, are usually analyzed both with their cultural implications. This study aims to present a semiotic analysis of some Romanian greeting formulas used during the communist period emphasizing their cultural meanings related to the political context. Thus, greeting formulae such as Să trăiți! (‘May you live long!’), Cu stimă! (‘My respects!’) and Sărut mâna! (‘I kiss your hand!’) reflect specific realities and their cultural meanings are ensured as long as they are invested with meaning at the community level.
