1. The analysis of empirical material will be carried out based on the semiotic approaches of Ch. S. Pierce, J. Lotman, Ch. Metz, J. Deleuze. The empirical material of the presentation will be based on the example of portraits of Sergei Parajanov by photographer Yuri Mechitov and on the film " Arabesques on the Pirosmani Theme "2. The present paper primarily highlights the following relations: the image of Parajanov and Tiflis as expressed in Yuri Mechetov’s photographs, the representation of Old Tiflis and Soviet Tbilisi in photography. The presentation will be based also on Sergei Parajanov’s film Arabesques on the Pirosmani Theme. The film will be analyzed as a semiotic translation of Pirosmani’s work into Parajanov’s language of cinema.3. The following concerns will be examined in detail within the context of the movie Arabesques on the Pirosmani Theme:- The “world of things” (hats, photographer's studio, etc.), in the film Arabesques on the Pirosmani Theme as sign-indexes reflecting the changes of the epoch- Reconstruction of Georgian and Tsarist Russian history based on visual focalizations of Pirosmani’s paintings,- Social problems of the era: Based on Pirosmani’s painting “Childless Millionaire and the Poor with Children” these will be analyzed in the context of the opposition between the “wealth” of the poor (=family rich with children) and. the “poverty” of the wealthy (=childless family),- “Spirit of the age”: feasts, description of visualized menus of restaurants in Old Tiflis, as well as women prostitutes, etc.
