Since their introduction in Colombia in the ‘80s for an extravagant zoo of drug trafficker Pablo Escobar, hippos have become an ecological problem near the basin of the Magdalena River. Changes in soil constitution, overpopulation, resource hoarding, and attacks to other animals and humans are some of the ecological effects. This presentation will introduce a discourse analysis of different “visions of nature” from stakeholders and public opinion around the control of hippos in Colombia. Such groups debate about measures to control the species, some more viable than others, like captivity, sterilization or culling, based on their diverse ideas and moral visions. Concretely, three particular discourses and visions of nature will be examined: animalista, narco-cultural and conservacionista. The presentation will follow this structure: the relevant social and ecological context of Colombia, the theory of visions of nature and its impact con conservation measures, an analysis of the three visions of nature and a computational analysis of their discourse dynamics and controversies in Twitter, and, finally, a discussion on possible courses of action and recommendations to address the close interrelation between public discourses and ecological conservation, particularly, based on an alternative approach to the “invasive species” concept, a proposal to extend the use of the term “semiocide” from biosemiotics theories.
