On SerendipityIn Structural Semantics (1966), Algirdas J. Greimas adapted the morphology of the Russian fairy tale to construct a canonical narrative schema meant to account for all narrative phenomena (from the tales of Maupassant to the recipe for pesto soup). This narratological model of semiotics has been very successful, which perhaps contributed to a somewhat inaccurate distinction between a structural and generative semiotics of narration and a cognitive semiotics of inference. This "inaccurate" distinction is based on the idea that Greimasian semiotics must necessarily deal with narrative texts (outside of which there is no salvation!), while semiotics informed by pragmatism (to which the semiotic thought from Peirce to Eco to the work of the research group in semiotics of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Bologna can be associated) would be dedicated to a more general philosophical reflection on signs.Through a story that recurs in semiotic literature - The Three Princes of Serendip - this intervention aims to follow the indication of Paolo Fabbri (Fabbri, 1998: 63) with the goal of bringing together "a cognitive semiotics of inference" and "a narrative semiotics of metaphor" to help reconcile the division between two cultures: the humanistic and the scientific, "or at least to think of them simultaneously", trying to understand how it is possible to speak of a model of the science of meaning.
