In his works (Pelc (1967), Pelc (1971)) Jerzy Pelc argued for the claim that we should replace the talk about indexical expressions with the talk about indexicality of expressions. Pelc's ideas anticipated certain views vividly discussed in contemporary philosophy of language (cf. Ciecierski (2021), Odrowąż-Sypniewska (2021)).In my paper, I shall discuss how a version of Pelc's idea can be applied in replying to the answering machine puzzle and cases of non-standard uses of expressions like ‘I’. I shall offer an analysis of the phenomena that is conservative with respect to the classical Kaplanian account of indexicality. The point of departure of the paper is the observation that some proper indexicals have demonstrative uses. It is argued that treating some occurrences of ‘now’ as cases of such uses results in an intuitive and simple solution to the answering machine puzzle. At the same time, treating some occurrences of ‘I’ in an analogous manner explains away the impression that some non-standard uses of ‘I’ enforce a modification of the standard semantics of the first-person pronoun (cf. Ciecierski (2022)).Ciecierski, Tadeusz (2021). Indexicality, meaning, use.
