The presentation aims to depict a networked situation where heterogeneous knowledges are preserved and coexist in human society, and the semiotic mechanisms that maintain it. These knowledges cannot be reduced to a homogenous whole, but the coexistence and copresence of these knowledge in the social sphere presumes that these knowledges are amalgamized into a colossal knowledge network, which is seemingly homogeneous in daily practices in a pragmatic manner in comprehending social reality around individuals. The amalgam of knowledges brings up investigations on how the amalgam is institutionalized and further legitimated, focusing on the mechanisms of maintaining the amalgam towards homeostasis. On the one hand, by understanding culture as a polyglot structure (Lotman), the newly generated texts reinforce the existent knowledge systems and are sedimented as contexts for future, thus solidifying the current amalgam to function “as it is”, which ensures the stability and the continuity of the amalgam (Eco). On the other hand, the constant communication between individuals imbues new information into the current amalgam and test the knowledges, altering them to cater to the current need. Moreover, the two aspects converge to construct the symbolic universe (Berger & Luckmann) as the ultimate mechanism of maintaining the amalgam. In this delicate balance that the symbolic universe functions as an “all-embracing frame of reference”, the fragility of social reality is underscored and leads to further discussions on cultural studies.
