Staging Macbeth is not a new phenomenon as it is one of the regular activities either as part of the academic curriculum or within the genre of performing art practices. However, the author as a theatre director, this paper is an outcome of his experience in visualizing the effect of textual symbols and signs in the performance of Macbeth through his direction on 1-3, June 2024 at Rothak (India). Without the participation of metaphors, symbols and signs, it becomes a difficult task to visualize many of the concepts, ideas and emotions, and quite interestingly, a vast amount of creativity and imagination is required to visualize these universal concepts and emotions for the audience who are local and have less exposure to the performance tradition. For instance, to transform human greed to attain power, one needs to employ more signs and symbols so that the scene becomes meaningful and relevant within the context of performance. Further, it is not the construction and presentation of the characters and their roles on the stage in the director’s own way rather, they are neatly executed through the utilization of signs, symbols, and metaphors that provide a new dimension to the international character with local costumes. The deep trauma after the killing of Duncan created a psychological imbalance and the whole destruction follows thereafter which are challenges for the play directors that have been overcome through the help of the interplay of signs, symbols and metaphors.
