The analysis aims to present the use of symbols identified with the Zaporozhian Cossacks during the subsequent terms of office of the supreme authorities of Ukraine in the 21st century - starting from the presidency of Leonid Kuchma, through Viktor Yushchenko, Viktor Yanukovych, Petro Poroshenko and Volodymyr Zelensky.Historical politics in Ukraine is a powerful tool regularly used by politicians. Serving as both a maintaining bond with the past and a factor identifying Ukrainians as a nation, it consistently appears not only in political declarations and speeches, but also in the physical symbols that represent this bond.Historical policy here means all activities undertaken by the highest state authorities and political groups, aimed at purposefully referring to the historical past. This concept includes both shaping the historical awareness of society and individual interpretation of national history by the central authorities.The research methodology is based on the study of press materials that consistently describe the studied phenomena occurring during individual presidencies. The semiotic approach to the mentioned symbols will enable understanding the specificity of Ukrainian historical politics, as well as forecasting its progress in the subsequent terms. The above-mentioned analysis will also work in the anthropological and cultural context, being both a factor initiating the dissemination of Cossack symbols, and using literary, musical and even sports sources.
