This work aims to explore the approximation between heterotopia concept, by Foucault, and the semiosphere one, by Lotman, based on an analysis of the codes that circulate in an urban vegetable garden, in the north of Portugal. It is a two-hectare space located near the urban centre of Vila Nova de Famalicão, with 259 plots, that attend 179 citizens-gardener. It is noteworthy that most of these candidates are elderly, that is, seen from the perspective of heterotopia, they live in a situation of crisis and, compared to the surroundings where the vegetable garden is installed, it presents itself as an Other space. The dynamics of its production are based on sustainability principles designated by SDG 12 of the 2030 Agenda. This place has been investigated since 2023´January. A fieldwork methodological support was based on the flanerie strategy, followed by an ethnographic exercise based on the anthropology of food, and then finished with 24 semi-structured interviews. Based on these dynamics and their first results, we can be supported by understanding the vegetable garden as a semiosphere, which vibrates different cultural texts if compared with those beyond its border. This unthinkable space, which at other times would disturb the reality order, became part of Famalicão reality and a refuge for many of their citizens. This vegetable garden creates a real space—another space in this city.
